THIS is a big year for Puebla. Mexico’s fourth-largest city is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Cinco de Mayo, when an outmanned Mexican army defeated the French troops of Napoleon III in 1862. To mark the occasion, the city’s hilltop forts are undergoing major renovations. But this colonial capital, known as one of the safest big cities in the country, is famous for food, not battlefields. Puebla’s namesake dish, mole poblano, will get its moment in the spotlight on May 2 and 3 at the first annualInternational Mole Festival. But with its intricate facades of Talavera tile, college town cafe culture, mild highland climate and historical sites, Puebla is always worthy of a weekend.

1. WATCH THE WORLD GO BY
On weekdays, Paseo Bravo (Calle 11 Sur between Avenida Reforma and Avenida 11 Poniente, Centro), a long, narrow plaza with a Talavera-tiled church at one end and a cantina at the other, is crowded with food carts, teenagers and office workers who have abandoned their desks. It’s the place to pass an hour in the shade, watching the leaves, the sky and passers-by. Or, on the other side of the centro histórico, walk among the sculptures and gardens of a former textile factory at Parque San Francisco (Callejón de la 10 Norte, Barrio Del Alto), where just-married couples and girls in colorful quinceañera dresses pose for photos.

2. HIGH ART, LOCAL ART
The Galería del Palacio (Portal Hidalgo 12, Centro; 52-222-409-7424 ; imacp.gob.mx) brings contemporary art to the Municipal Palace, including incendiary shows like a recent exhibition that confronted the sanctity of national icons like the Virgin of Guadalupe and Frida Kahlo. Around the corner, the Capilla del Arte (Calle 2 Norte 6, Centro; 52-222-242-2808 ;www.udlap.mx/default.aspx), the loftlike gallery of the University of the Americas Puebla, displays installations and other artwork. The Fototeca Juan C. Méndez (Calle 7 Oriente 15; 52-222-246-3165 ) hosts photography exhibitions in a two-story house; a recent show featured internationally known Oaxacan photographers.
8:30 p.m.
3. POBLANO TíPICO
Puebla is famous for its regional comida típica (typical foods), like chiles en nogada (a poblano chile stuffed with meat, fruits and nuts and topped with a walnut cream sauce and pomegranate seeds) and camotes de Santa Clara (a sweet-potato candy). For tacos árabes, marinated pork on flatbread that originated in the city’s Lebanese community (14 pesos, about $1 at 13 pesos to the dollar), and spicy, meaty frijoles charros (cowboy beans, 10 pesos), wait your turn at Las Ranas (Avenida 2 Poniente 102; 52-222-242-4734 ). For mole poblano (90 pesos), the thick sauce of chocolate, nuts, chiles and spices, locals swear by Fonda La Mexicana (Avenida 16 de Septiembre 706; 52-222-232-6747 ). The English-language Web site All About Puebla (puebla-mexico.com) is the best source for food, festivals and everything else poblano.
10 p.m.
4. THE SIDEWALK SCENE
After dinner, pull up a stool at an outdoor table beneath the jacarandas in Barrio del Artista, where the arched portals of a former market have been converted into closet-size studios. More often than not, the paintings — pastel landscapes, lusty nudes — are mediocre, but the blocklong arcade is beautiful. At night, the cafes on the plazuela are crowded with students, who come for live music and drink specials.
Saturday
9 a.m.
5. TORTILLAS AND TAPESTRIES

In a terra-cotta-colored courtyard, Casona de la China Poblana (Calle 4 Norte 2; 52-222-242-5621 ; www.casonadelachinapoblana.com) serves vibrant preparations of classic Mexican breakfasts (65 to 99 pesos) like chilaquiles (fried tortilla chips, in red or green sauce, with fresh cheese) and scrambled eggs with huitlacoche (corn fungus), nopal (cactus) and corn. For traditional textiles, drop into Siuamej Puebla Crafts Cooperative (Avenida Palafox y Mendoza 206). Look for the quechquemitls made with natural dyes and woven on backstrap looms, and distinctive tapestries.
12 p.m.
6. CELEBRATING CERAMICS

Watch as artisans turn black clay into elaborately painted pottery at Talavera de la Reyna’s workshop (Camino a la Carcaña 2413, Recta a Cholula; 52-222-225-4132 ;talaveradelareyna.com.mx) in Cholula, a neighboring town with a pre-Hispanic pyramid at its center. For English-language tours (20 pesos), call ahead. Across the highway, in a yellow cube, the two-year-old Museo Alarca (Lateral Sur Recta a Cholula 3510, Cholula; 52-222-225-4058 ) shows the work of contemporary artists who have been paired with traditional artisans to create gorgeous sculptures. The museum store sells some of the highest-quality work around, from 135-peso tequila cups to four-foot-tall, 30,000-peso urns.
2 p.m.
7. MARKET DAY
Breach the boundaries of Puebla’s urban sprawl with a trip to Atlixco, a town at the foot of the often smoking, snow-coned Popocatépetl volcano. At Mercado de Atlixco (Avenida Independencia), young women stand on crates, thrusting cecina (dried, salted beef) samples at passing customers. The barbacoa (slow-roasted mutton; 45 pesos per half kilo) at Barbacoa de Marcia is moist and spicy. Match grilled meats with tortillas (3 pesos), nopales (10 pesos) and fresh cheese from nearby stalls, grab a seat at a communal table and listen to the roaming Norteño band. Then walk off lunch with a stroll to Cerro de San Miguel, Atlixco’s church-topped hill. On the way back to Puebla, stop at the Church of Santa María Tonantzintla to see its carnival-esque Baroque interior.
5:30 p.m.
8. BOOKS AND BREW

Pull aside a beaded curtain and pull up a stool at Sapito Pulquero (Calle 4 Sur between Avenidas 5 and 7 Oriente), a pulquería selling the viscous, lightly alcoholic fermented sap of the maguey plant in one-liter bamboo mugs. In addition to plain pulque (17 pesos), the shop sells flavored pulque (30 pesos) blended with fruits or nuts. Puebla is home to the first public library in the New World, the Biblioteca Palafoxiana (Casa de la Cultura, Avenida 5 Oriente 5; 52-222-777-2581 ), founded in 1646. The nonprofit Profética (Calle 3 Sur 701; 52-222-246-9101 ; profetica.com.mx), in a sprawling 16th-century house, carries on the tradition with a public library and an excellent bookstore.
8 p.m.
9. A TASTE OF SPAIN

Considering Puebla’s reputation as a culinary capital, the city has a shortage of exceptional restaurants. La Conjura (Avenida 9 Oriente 201, Centro; 52-222-232-9693 ;laconjura.com.mx), a Spanish establishment in a former tocinería (butcher shop specializing in pork), is among the best, serving Castilian dishes like fideuà (Valencian-style paella, made with noodles, 295 pesos), for two, made with either squid ink or saffron.
10:30 p.m.
10. ART BARS

Puebla has one of the best beer-centric bars in the country, Utopia Belgian Pub (Avenida 9 Oriente 1B; Centro; belgianbeerbistro.webs.com), where there are 80 brands of bottled beer and Belgian-style pub snacks. The “art cafe” and bar El Breve Espacio (Calle 7 Norte No. 8, Centro; 52-222-246-2693 ; facebook.com/breve.puebla) has shelves crowded with books, a small stage, a four-stool bar and performances from Brazilian jazz to flamenco.
Sunday
9 a.m.
11. SOUVENIR STOP

The silversmith at Manos de la Tierra (Calle 6 Sur 4, Centro;manosdelatierrapuebla.com.mx) creates jewelry using antique Talavera and onyx (from 300 pesos). The shop also sells tooled leather bags in deep primary colors. For Pop Art a la Mexicana (lucha libre photo frames, papier-mâché Catrina figurines), try Tierra Verde (Avenida 5 Oriente 601, Plazuela de los Sapos, Centro; tierraverde.com.mx), just down the street. The one-man cigar factory Legendaria (Avenida 5 Oriente 207, Centro; 52-222-246-3311 ) makes puros rolled from tobacco leaves grown in nearby Veracruz or imported from Cuba (from 70 pesos).
12 p.m.
12. FANCY FOOD COURT

For lunch, try the new Mercado de Sabores Poblanos (4 Poniente between Calles 11 and 13 Norte), a sprawling version of the traditional Mexican market, where stalls sell cemitas (a local sandwich), sweets and other regional dishes. Then, walk over to the Museo Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Mexicanos (Calle 11 Norte, 1005, Centro; 52-222-774-0105 ;museoferrocarriles.org.mx). Sundays are free at this outdoor train museum. Retired rail cars and steam engines rest on a lawn beside a former terminal, and an impressive collection of photographs documents train lines and the lives of railway workers.
IF YOU GO
Housed in the former Italian Consulate, the four-year-old Hotel Puebla de Antaño(Calle 3 Oriente 206, Centro; 52-222-246-2403 ; hotelpuebladeantano.com) has 19 opulent suites (from $99), an elegant French restaurant on the ground floor and a rooftop bar with views of the cathedral.
A short walk from the zócalo, the main square, Casa Reyna (Privada 2 Oriente 1007, Centro; 52-222-232-0032 ; casareyna.com) is modern and colorful. Each of the 10 suites is decorated with ceramics from Talavera de la Reyna and vintage wooden furniture. Rooms from 1,200 pesos ($94).
